Day 3 CHENNAI

Morning breakfast at hotel and than proceed for city tour.

One of India’s largest cities- Madras is the capital of the southern state of Tamil Nadu. The Tamillians are the proud inheritors of a rich cultural heritage, which is one of the main reasons for their beliefs of superiority over the hybridized culture of North India. Fort St. George (1653), built by the British, presently houses the State secretariat and the legislative assembly. The Fort has an interesting museum with fascinating collections of memorabilia from the early days of the British Raj. St. Mary’s Church (1678-80), was the first English church and the oldest surviving in India.

Day 4 CHENNAI – KANCHIPURAM – CHENNAI

Morning breakfast at hotel and proceed for excursion to Kanchipuram.

Kanchipuram, a Hindu Holy City and capital of the Pallava dynasty from the 7th to 9th centuries AD is renowned for temples and silk, and you will see plenty of both. The temples range in date from the 8th to the 17th century. The latest building was impressive in its size, the height of its gopuram, the intricacy of its carvings and wealth of colour, but, the earliest temples, of golden sandstone, are more aesthetically pleasing, the only colour provided is by a flock of ring-necked.

Day 5 CHENNAI – MAHABALIPURAM – PONDICHERRY

Morning breakfast at hotel and than drive for Pondicherry.

Enroute visit Mahabalipuram – Mamallapuram was a 7th century port city of the South Indian dynasty of the Pallavas. It is believed to have been named after the Pallava king Mamalla. It has various historic monuments built largely between the 7th and the 9th century, and has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 6 PONDICHERRY – CHIDAMBRAM – TANJORE

Morning breakfast at hotel and than drive for Tanjore

Enroute visit Chidambaram – Chidambaram is one of the most ancient and most celebrated of shrines in India.Here visit the famous Nataraja temple with the root of the sanctum – sanctorum covered with golden plates located in the centre of the town covering an area of 40 acres.

Day 7 TANJORE

Morning breakfast at hotel.

Proceed for full day city tour.

Thanjavur is home to the famous granite-stone Brihadeeswara Temple built by Raja Raja Chola I, one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Its 14-storey Vimana (216 feet) and the exquisite workmanship is a fascinating sight. The Nandi Bull opposite to the sanctum sanctorum weighing 20 tonnes is carved from a single stone.

Other places of interest are the Sarabhoji Maharajas Fort, Rajagopal Arsenal Tower, Sadar Mahal, Bell Tower, and Saraswathi Mahal Library with its rare collection of ancient books and manuscripts, and the art gallery. The Sangeetha Mahal has an acoustically perfect musical hall. Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Pookara Street, dating back to pre-1740 A.D., and Sacred Heart Cathedral Church are some ancient churches here.

Day 8 TANJPRE – MADURAI

Morning breakfast at hotel and than drive for Madurai.

Afternoon proceed for city tour.

The biggest landmark of the city is the Meenakshi Temple. This twin temple was built 2,000 years ago, with constant additions made to it by the many rulers that reigned over the region. It is in fact the oldest and the largest temple complex in India, covering an area of 65,000 Sq m. The two shrines here are of Lord Shiva and his spouse Meenakshi. It is surrounded by a Hall of Thousand Pillars surrounded by statues and carvings.

The temple has seven towering gopurams richly covered with figures of gods, mythological characters and animals. The four main gopurams at the four entrances are at an awesome height of 50 metres each.

Day 10 PERIYAR

Morning breakfast at hotel and than proceed for full day city tour.

Periyar Wildlife Park in Kerala is one of the most captivating wildlife parks not only in India but in the world. In 1895, the British undertook water resource management plans for the area and started work on a dam and an artificial lake under the auspices of Col. J. Pennycuick. The picturesque lake in the heart of the sanctuary was originally 26 sq km but now spans an area of 55 sq km, which initially led to the submersion of large tracts of forestland, slowly attracted wild animals. It eventually resulted in the adjoining forests being granted protection by the Maharaja of Travancore. Post-1975 Periyar finds itself in the enviable position of being a national park as well as a protected tiger reserve.

Day 12 JAIPUR – COCHIN

Morning breakfast at hotel.

Transfer to the airport to board flight for Cochin with Spice Jet (SG 131) depart at 0600 and reach Cochin at 1040 hrs.

On arrival assistance and transfer to the hotel.

Evening proceed for Kathakali Dance:
A special treat awaits us this evening as we proceed to witness the strength and vigor of Kathakali dance drama, as it enacts episodes from great Indian epics. The extremely stylized gestures, the elaborate make-up, the masks and the splendid costumes of these all-male dancers, recreate an incomparable sense of pageantry.

Day 13 COCHIN

Morning breakfast at hotel. And proceed for city tour.

Visit the ancient Jewish Town, the historic Mattanchery “Dutch Palace” and Fort Cochin, the oldest European settlement in India. Photograph the cantilevered Chinese fishing nets and other indelible marks of early traders.
